The Michelle Obama bombshell

Sites carrying this story are suffering denial-of-service attacks.  All Democrats should know about this, whether you want to believe it or not.  It certainly is on the radar of the Republicans.   So ... here's what's known so far:

The Michelle Obama Rant Tape was filmed between June 26th - July 1st 2004 in Chicago, IL at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference at Trinity United Church: specifically the Women's Event.

Michelle Obama appeared as a panelist alongside Mrs. Khadijah Farrakhan and Mrs. James Meeks.

Bill Clinton spoke during the Conference, as did Bill Cosby and other speakers, but not at the panel Michelle attended.

Michelle Obama spoke at the Women's Event, but referenced Bill Clinton in her rant --- his presence at the conference was the impetus for her raving, it seems.

For about 30 minutes, Michelle Obama launched into a rant about the evils of America, and how America is to blame for the problems of Africa. Michelle personally blamed President Clinton for the deaths of millions of Africans and said America is responsible for the genocide of the Tutsis and other ethnic groups. She then launched into an attack on "whitey", and talked about solutions to black on black crime in the realm of diverting those actions onto white America. Her rant was fueled by the crowd: they reacted strongly to what she said, so she got more passionate and enraged, and that's when she completely loses it and says things that have made the mouths drop of everyone who's seen this.

The "tape" is a DVD that Trinity United sold on its website, and possibly offered free for download up until March 2008 when Trinity's site was scrubbed and the DVDs were no longer offered for sale.

Honestly, I think on things like this (2.00 / 1)

reserve judgement until you actually see whatever was said, IN CONTEXT.

FYI, there are a huge number, perhaps HUNDREDS of US interventions in foreign lands that 99.99% of Americans know nothing of. Many of them left huge scars. Many of them were undertaken for one reaon only, money.

That is our legacy of colonialism and the hunt for obscene levels of profit and raw materials without actually having to pay market rates for them.

Like it or not, its our history.

I have no doubt that anyone who BOTH loves our country AND knows even a small amount about things like them is going to get extremely emotional about it.

No, I am not defending anything she might have said, sight unseen, but yes, I am saying she might have been justified on some level with something - athough NOT for the stuff the poster said.. (which I doubt is true)

There is a web site called 'third world traveller" or somethig like that that is basically the only site on the Net that makes a serious effort to catalog these interventions.. and their impacts.

If we want to enter the 21st century in a SUSTAINABLE and GLOBALLY POSITIVE way, we are GOING TO HAVE TO MAKE PEACE WITH THIS PAST AND ITS IMPLICATIONS..

However, there is a whole generation of right-leaning Washington insiders who go into full attack mode whenever these issues are brought up.

Thats another possible reason they HATE the Clintons because the Clintons did more to acknowledge this past than any previous administration did.

It's as though Google doesn't exist (2.00 / 17)

"at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference at Trinity United Church"

Bzzzt.  It was at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers.  There was press coverage of this event, but somehow this rant from a senator's wife received NO coverage.

The Way Back Machine on archive has NO evidence of this video existing on the TUCC site.

Still not one person has gone on the record as seeing this tape.   Give it up.  It's over.

Please delete this thread.

Re: It's as though Google doesn't exist (2.00 / 1)

I took Obama's word back in 2007 that the controversy Rolling Stone mentioned about Rev. Wright was related to Wright's support for the South Africa boycott. I should not have.

This event took place before the 2004 Democratic convention. It is very unlikely that the wife of a candidate for Senate would get any attention. And as the Wright episode shows the press won't cover these things until the Republicans push them.

I would prefer to know more about what is out there.

He had already been a state Senator for years, was running for U.S. Senate at the time, and probably had designs for a presidential run down the line. What, do you think he just realized last year that Michelle and he shouldn't say racially insulting things?

Re: It's as though Google doesn't exist (2.00 / 1)

Speaking as a typical white person, I think he still has some work to do on that front. From what I've seen Michelle Obama has much farther to go than Barack, and clearly the community at Trinity eggs on people who say stupid things.

One thing the Obama campaign has taught us is that in a presidential campaign anything a surrogate says is fair game, regardless of context. What Michelle said, if anything, will be put in the least favorable light by the Republicans. Then the question will be how Barack Obama handles the situation.

We need more context before we can discuss a defense. Treating this as if it doesn't exist is becoming less tenable.

Re: It's as though Google doesn't exist (2.00 / 2)

You're kidding, right? The tape's been "rumored" for days, all seemingly coming from the same source.  Flowbee was supposedly going to release it days ago, but shockingly didn't. The facts about it keep changing (what she said, where she said it, when she said it).

No one can seem to produce this tape, which they also incongruously claim was available on the Internet until March--over a year after he declared his candidacy and months into the primaries.

Meanwhile, these same video sleuths managed to find all kinds of videos of Rev. Wright's inanities. Yet somehow, in the process of getting the dirt on Wright, they managed to skip over the tape where the actual candidate's wife insults "whitey."

And you're saying that the tape's existence is more tenable now? Again, are you kidding me??

Re: It's as though Google doesn't exist (none / 0)

The Rev. Wright videos were rumored for years, I first saw mention of them in Feb 2007. And yet no-one produced them until it looked like Obama had the Democratic nomination. Trinity stopped selling those DVDs in March, once Rev. Wright's sermons were shown on national news shows.

As far as I can tell the rumor as reported by Larry Johnson has been consistent (I don't often read NoQuarter). Now that mainstream talking heads like Fund and Beckel are repeating the same thing it is less tenable to ignore the rumor.

We bumpkins in Chicago certainly don't have any media to speak of that would have been interested in inflammatory rhetoric from the wife of our probable next Senator.

Re: Sure because (2.00 / 1)

I don't think much of the media generally. Few reporters do any independent research, they generally follow what their sources tell them. And even that is very subject to their editors and employers interests.

But yes, I would say that the Chicago media really dropped the ball on Trinity UCC and Rev. Wright. My guess is that the reporters who would recognize the story weren't covering TUCC.

Re: Sure because (2.00 / 1)

The media is not objective.  It has shifted favorites over the years, e.g., Reagan. It is also very likely this was not a panel that it was thought worth attending.  If you're a reporter, who are you going to do a story on first, second, and third?  Bill Clinton?  Bill Cosby?  Assorted members of the AA political community who already were pretty famous?  Reporters sure don't sit down and attend all day conferences, not from what I've seen in Washington DC.

We'll see what happens.  I'll believe it when I see it.  But I personally do not feel Larry Johnson made stuff up.  Maybe he was being fed false info by whomever wants to have this information, true or false, out.  Even reliable sources lie sometimes.

Re: Sure because (none / 0)

Either that, or our media isn't interested in sensationalizing that which the national media seems to be interested in sensationalizing.

Father Pfleger and Reverend Wright are from unknowns in Chicago -- they've both been on the frontlines of numerous issues in the community, from community violence to fair housing/fair wages to immigration.

They've also had their controversial moments - Father Pfleger in particular is no stranger to being at loggerheads with the Chicago archdiocese.  In fact, 2003 was supposed to be his last year at St. Sabina -- Cardinal George said then that he would NOT be reappointed after completion of his then current term there.   However, the outrage from the St. Sabina community -- where Pfleger is very much beloved because of the community service he has done, regardless of how often his mouth gets him in trouble -- was such that Cardinal George had no option but to relent.

What we're seeing here is NOT a matter of the Chicago media not doing its job nor some hidden "OMFG!!!" revelations about MY community.

What we are seeing is a double standard.

Forget race - what we're seeing here is our first "urban candidate" for President... and for better or worse, we do things differently than the good folks of rural areas that have the fortune to have any of their failings brushed off because they're such "salt of the earth" good people.

While he was in the state senate - Obama represented more constituents than do the majority of congressman and more than a dozen Senators.

It's a large and diverse community.  The discourse is different because the community is different.

Obama's district in particular is very much a patchwork area -- from the ivory towers of the U of C, to upper middle class neighborhoods, to poor struggling neighborhoods -- it's very much a diverse community.

Sometimes that diversity has caused tension, sometimes leaders in the community DO say things that might shock outsiders.

I'm very sorry about that, but it continues to puzzle me why some of the virulent BS that comes from rural America is so easily brushed aside (and I grew up in a small, one stoplight town - so I'm quite aware of its existence) as "not the norm", while our community and our community leaders are so broadly judged on the basis of a few minutes of YouTube clips.

All of this is just the speculation of the blogger at HillBuzz, who has admitted as much.  There is no evidence that the video was taped at this conference.  Nor is there evidence that a video actually exists.

What there is evidence of is a concerted campaign among GOP operatives to spread the notion that the video exists - to Larry Johnson, to Bob Beckel, etc - and that is something of which we should be aware.  Let's not assume that the video exists without proof, but lets not lose fact of what the other side is trying to do here.

Re: The Michelle Obama bombshell (2.00 / 2)

It doesn't hurt to know what's coming, if that's what coming.

That story is probably too specific to be true.

However, from what we know of Michelle, I think it obvious that she said stupid or should I say politically incorect things in the past and that some of it is on tape... to be released by the GOP around mid september.

Assuming that the super-likely will happen is just politics 101.

Re: The Michelle Obama bombshell (2.00 / 1)

Assuming that the super-likely will happen is just politics 101.

For instance, assume that the GOP will attempt to start rumors about things which are totally untrue.

And assume that highly credulous people will believe them despite the fact that the stories are completely non-credible.

Fine,

by all means do assume that Michele never said anything politically incorect in her entire life.

Do assume that no attack will come.

But don't go complaint when the likely happens and you've got no strategy to deal with it.

3. Excuses; She meant to say, you didn't here her correctly, she's not like that anymore, etc, etc, etc,

I see a picture. (2.00 / 1)

This diary's about a bombshell video, apparently filmed by fairies, edited by the Keebler elves, and distributed by TCP/IP via carrier pigeon.

This is the commentary at the site you linked to:
'If I had a nickel for every time "strong black woman" or "oh no you didn't" was uttered at that luncheon...'

Yeah, if you did have a nickel, then what?  You'd buy another McCain bumper sticker?

"First of all this isn't my diary but the rumor IS out there whether you like it or not."

The rumor is out there because people want this rumor to be out there.  There hasn't been the slightest bit of evidence of it existing.  Even NRO has given up on it.  It's a basic whisper campaign and you can either further it or push back against it.  Your choice.

...on the plus side, it keeps some McCain people searching for this tape instead of doing something constructive.

That is true; it's possible that those who started the rumor actually have something to back it up....or not.
There hasn't been the slightest bit of evidence of it existing.
I totally agree with you. That's why I didn't personally create a diary like this. That's not saying that my curiousity didn't get the best of me; I checked it out.
Even NRO has given up on it.
Did they state that it was just a rumor? That would be helpful.
It's a basic whisper campaign and you can either further it or push back against it.
Maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Like I said before, I didn't create a diary on this subject because there's no proof...but if there's any truth to it, I'm not responsible for protecting politicians for the damage they do to themselves/political careers. If it's just a rumor, it won't go anywhere and there's nothing for you to worry about.

Well, I heard the diarist is a pederast, too. I have zero proof of it, but people are discussing it all around the internets, and all their websites are getting shut down by black-ops hackers employed by the government, which is secretly run by a pro-Obama cartel.

Supposedly, the video shows the diary engaged in salacious acts with a boy. Or maybe it's with an adult woman. Or maybe it's just video of him shopping in the grocery store alone. Whatever it is, it'll be a bombshell.

This rumor is just being used to fuel a fire that does not exist.

If you do a search on youtube and google, you come across lots of righties talking about the possible existence of this "video".

So... if they say it enough times, then it must be real. People will talk and write about this "video" but no one will ever see it because it does not exist.

In some ways, that is all they need to do, this has rove fingerprints all over it.

But wait.... "THEY" scrubbed it... had their "PEOPLE" threaten other people and had it removed.... from the ENTIRE internet! How devious... how smart... how evil!
