Unfiltered: Real Ohioans respond to John McCain

Today John McCain will be in the Mahoning Valley trying to convince Ohioans that the economy has been good in the seven and a half years under George Bush. In fact, he described the Bush years as "a pretty good prosperous time" and said that NAFTA has been "a great thing for America."

So we went to the Mahoning Valley, an area that has been devastated by the policies of the Bush Administration, to see what real Ohioans think about McCain's views on the economy. And they responded very candidly. You can watch the video below.

Transcript of "Unfiltered":

Text: Youngstown, OH

An economy devastated by seven and a half years under George Bush.

What do real Ohioans think about John McCain's views on the economy?

Man 1:  He had the audacity to say, well, the only problem with American workers is that they need to be educated.  Educated to what?  Eat less?

Text:  John McCain said that NAFTA has been "a great thing for America."

Man 2:  I couldn't believe it when I first heard that he had said that.  In our community especially, as you can see, it's been devastating.  If he were to be president, I can't imagine how bad this community would become four years from now.

Text:  John McCain describes the Bush years as "a pretty good prosperous time."

Woman 1:  Health care for the workers are just cut to a minimum.  Where does he get the idea that we are better off?

Man 3:  Our economy is not up to date like it should be.  We feel that John McCain and Bush is the same person and we feel that we don't need him in that office.

Woman 1:  We are not going to be able to keep our children here in Ohio.  We are not going to be able to keep our grandchildren around us because they all have to go somewhere else to work.  There are no jobs in this valley.

Man 2:  The steel industry is gone.  Everyone around here is going to have to continue working at minimum wage jobs.  And to Bush and McCain minimum wage means wages so low you can't live on them.

Woman 1:  This is sad.  This is really sad, that we in America have to have our friends and our neighbors go without food.  I don't know what we're going to do.  I just know that I never want to leave the Mahoning Valley.  This is my area.  I grew up here and I don't ever want to ever leave it.  But I'd also like to have my grandchildren down the street.

an area that has been devastated by the policies of the Bush Administration

The free-trade at any cost approach, the open door for Mexican manufactured goods via NAFTA, and the lack of tariff on Chinese imports to the US, all date to, and were very aggressively pushed by, the Clinton Administration.

And when workers who were going to be displaced by this complained, they were told pretty much by Bill Clinton what McCain is telling them here: that they need more "education".

Is Barack Obama proposing to place tariffs on Mexican and Chinese imports? If not, shut up and sit down.
